REGISTRATION OF DEATH :
Death of an Indian national should be registered with the High Commission by the next of kin of the deceased immediately by submitting the death certificate issued by Government of Kenya and last held Indian passport of the deceased. Next of kin or funeral Director/ Undertaker or any authorized individual by next of kin/relative(s) / family member(s) may complete the formalities as mentioned below for the same:-
1. Miscellaneous form should be dully filled in and signed by the informant. (https://www.hcinairobi.gov.in/public_files/assets/pdf/Miscellaneous_Services_Form.pdf)
2. Death Registration Form
3. Original Passport of the deceased and copies of first two and last two pages of the passport and the page (s) containing passport officer’s observation (s)(if any)
4. Death Certificate, clearly mentioning the cause of death, issued by the relevant local authority in original and its photocopy
5. Cremation Certificate/Burial Permit in original and photocopy
6. Police Report/Extract, in case of accident at work place
7. Post-Mortem Report, in case of accident (unnatural death)
Letter from the company/sponsor mentioning the details of the compensation and the insurance amount being provided to the family of the deceased by the employer.
Following information is to be provided by the informant during Registration of death:

FOR TRANSPORTATION OF MORTAL REMAINS :
If the next of kin of the deceased Indian national/OCI card holder wish to transport his/her mortal remains (dead body) to India for funeral purposes, the High Commission issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in this regard. Before issuance of this NOC, next of kin of the deceased is required to complete certain formalities with local Government authorities and have to appoint a local Funeral Director/ Undertaker to complete other required formalities for transportation of dead body. For this service, applicants have to apply in person to the High Commission.
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India has developed an e-Clearance for Afterlife Remains (eCARe) portal to streamline and expedite the process of Pubic Health Clearance for transporting human remains to India. The link to access the portal is as follows: https://ecare.mohfw.gov.in The eCARe Web portal is aimed at integrating all stakeholders on a single all-in-one interface, including the consignee, Airport Health Organizations (APHOs) and airlines. The portal facilitates smooth and timely clearance of documents with automated periodic alerts and live status tracking.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS ARE:
1. Embalming certificate issued by an authorized agency stating that the dead body or human remains have been embalmed and placed in a hermetically sealed (airtight and water proof) casket
2. Certificate of packaging of Human Remains as per WHO guidelines
3. Valid Air-ticket (Air way bill) for transportation of mortal remains
4. Information about next of Kin
5. Power of attorney and consent from the legal heir. (If the person who accompanies the body to India or collects the body in India is not a relative of the deceased, the next of kin/ a relative/ a family member of the deceased must convey his/ her consent notarised to the High Commission of India for transportation of the body to India through the authorized
6. If the body is transported without any escort, an Affidavit from next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s) taking full responsibility for collecting the body at the airport in India along with photocopy of passport or any other photo identity document in respect of the next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s), needs to be )
Please note that :
1. If the cause of death is mentioned as Cardio-respiratory arrest or natural death or pending or to be ascertained after post-mortem,
or
2. If it is not possible to clearly mention that exact cause of death because of some unavoidable reasons, then in all such situations as mentioned in above two points, the health department of the concerned country may issue a certificate stating – “the person has not died because of infectious/communicable/notifiable disease”
TRANSPORTATION OF ASHES TO INDIA
If the next of kin of the deceased Indian national/OCI card holder wish to transport his/her ashes to India for funeral purposes, the High Commission issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in this regard. The next of kin has to fill in Miscellaneous services form and visit the High Commission of Indian in person for the same after booking appointment. One has to bring all necessary documents in original and a set of photocopies including passport of the deceased, death certificate, burial/cremation permit, custom clearance etc.
