Press Release on the occasion of 153rd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi & 16th International Day of Non-Violence

High Commission of India celebrated the 153rd Birth Anniversary of ‘Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi at Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library in the University of Nairobi. The library has been renovated with the help of Government of India grant assistance of US$ one million. The renovated library was inaugurated by Dr. S. Jaishankar, Hon’ble External Affairs Minister of India in June 2021.

High Commissioner and other mission officials paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue within the University campus. Thereafter, at the Library, Prof. Julius A. Ogeng'o, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Mr. Nasser O. Okoth, representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, Mr. Kenneth S Ombongi, Chairman of Kenya India Friendship Association (KIFA), and Mr. Sharad Rao, a scholar, legal luminary and eminent diaspora member joined the High Commission, members of the Indian-origin community and other participants in emphasizing the significant contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to humanity and the continuing relevance of his teachings in today’s world, particularly the principles of truth and non-violence for peacefully resolving conflicts among society and nations.

Commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s seminal contribution in this regard, the United Nations marks 2nd October, the birth anniversary of Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
